On April 28, the Chinese Permanent Mission to Vienna announced the official establishment of the Vienna Group of Friends of Global Governance. At the regular press conference on April 29, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian stated that China expects more like-minded countries to join the Group, support efforts to strengthen the authority and status of the United Nations, and jointly work to reform and improve global governance.
On April 28, China successfully held a thematic event on the Global Governance Initiative and the launching ceremony of the Vienna Group of Friends of Global Governance at the UN Headquarters in Vienna. The event was attended by permanent representatives of over 40 countries, including the founding members of the Group, representatives of international organizations such as the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), as well as experts from international think tanks.
Spokesperson Lin Jian noted that the event was held in a warm atmosphere, with all participants speaking actively. They expressed strong recognition of and support for the Global Governance Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping, and spoke highly of China’s important leading role in supporting the UN’s causes, advocating multilateralism, safeguarding fairness and justice, and reforming and improving the global governance system. Participants looked forward to strengthening communication and coordination through the Group on the multilateral platform in Vienna, building broader consensus, and making new contributions to safeguarding multilateralism and advancing the development and reform of the global governance system.
Lin Jian emphasized that this marks the third Group of Friends of Global Governance established by China under the UN framework, following the launch in New York last December and in Geneva this February. In less than five months, the Group has grown from scratch and taken root in New York, Geneva, and Vienna, with its membership expanding and its influence and cohesion continuously increasing. This fully demonstrates that reforming and improving global governance and jointly addressing global challenges represent the will of the people and the trend of the times.
“Global governance is a matter for all. China expects more like-minded countries to join the Group of Friends of Global Governance, support efforts to strengthen the authority and status of the United Nations, and jointly work to reform and improve global governance,” Lin Jian said.
