The China Wildlife Conservation Association and the Atlanta Zoo in the United States have launched a new round of collaborative research on giant panda conservation.

release time:2026/4/24

Last year, our association signed an international cooperative research agreement on giant panda conservation with the Atlanta Zoo in the United States. According to the agreement, a pair of giant pandas, "Ping Ping" (male) and "Fu Shuang" (female), from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, will travel to the United States to begin a ten-year giant panda conservation cooperation, continuing the more than 20-year-long "panda bond" between the people of our two countries.

To ensure the healthy life of the two giant pandas in the United States, the US side has actively carried out various preparations, including renovating and upgrading their enclosures, to create a more comfortable and safer living environment for the pandas participating in this new round of cooperation. Chinese experts have simultaneously provided technical guidance to the US side on enclosure renovations, clarifying the standards and requirements for giant panda enclosure facilities, feeding management, food supply, and health care.

Following the previous cooperation agreement, giant pandas "Yang Yang" and "Lun Lun" began their residency at the Atlanta Zoo in 1999, successfully breeding five litters of seven cubs, achieving the best results in international giant panda breeding cooperation between China and Europe and the United States. The two sides have also carried out cooperation in areas such as behavioral training, preventive veterinary medicine, and conservation education. Their academic exchanges have been active and fruitful, playing a vital role in improving the technical level of giant panda conservation research and promoting the development of giant panda conservation. They have also made positive contributions to enhancing mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese and American people.

This new round of international cooperation on giant panda conservation between China and the United States will further promote greater achievements in the prevention and control of major giant panda diseases, scientific and technological exchanges, and support for wild giant panda conservation and the construction of giant panda national parks. It will make new contributions to global biodiversity conservation and enhancing the friendship between the two peoples.
