On April 2, 2026, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, held a telephone conversation with Bahraini Foreign Minister and rotating chair of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
Zayani briefed Wang on the latest developments in the Middle East situation and Pakistan's position, stating that the Gulf states are currently facing severe security challenges, and navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is obstructed. Pakistan is willing to leverage the role of the UN Security Council to resolve the navigation issue in the strait. Pakistan hopes to strengthen communication and coordination with China.
Wang Yi clarified China's principled position of opposing aggression and advocating peace. He stated that China and Pakistan recently issued a five-point initiative to restore peace and stability in the Gulf and Middle East regions, which includes calls for a cessation of attacks on civilians and non-military targets, ensuring the security of the Strait of Hormuz, and restoring normal navigation. A ceasefire is the common aspiration of the international community. The actions of the UN Security Council should help ease tensions and resume negotiations, not endorse illegal acts of war, much less add fuel to the fire. As a permanent member of the Security Council and a responsible major power, China is willing to work with Pakistan to promote the cessation of hostilities, the restoration of peace, and the achievement of lasting regional stability, safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of the Global South, especially small and medium-sized countries.
